How to Meditate

To begin, find a quiet, comfortable place where you will not be interrupted. You may sit on the floor or in a chair, but try to sit up straight.

Close your eyes and drift into a meditative state, devoid of thoughts and words. When thoughts intrude, let go of them, and return to your meditative state. Breathe deeply.

To help focus the physical energy of your brain, place the thumb of your left hand on your forehead, between your eyebrows. This is near the area of your brain called the prefrontal cortex, where your highest thought processes occur; the Eastern healers have long referred to this area as “the third eye.” Then, with your thumb still touching your forehead, make a fist, but leave your little finger extended. Grasp your extended little finger with the palm of your right hand, and extend the little finger of your right hand.

Holding that position, breathe deeply for three minutes. Then inhale deeply, and put your hands down. You should already feel somewhat more centered, focused, and aware.

Begin to repeat a simple, spiritual phrase, or mantra, to yourself, such as, “I am truth.” Your mantra will help keep thoughts away, and will remind you that we live in a sacred, mysterious universe.

Breathe deeply and slowly, and begin to focus on your immediate environment. Listen to everything around you, as you pay attention to the sounds entering each ear. Become aware of everything: the feelings of touch and warmth on your skin, the sensations of sun or wind, the taste in your mouth, the smells that enter your nose.

Do not place more attention on one sensation than another. All are equally important, and equally unimportant. Do not reject any of them as negative. Do not embrace any of them as positive. Assume a neutral state of mind. Detach yourself from all judgment.

If you have pain, begin to focus on it intently. Note how it sometimes shifts from place to place, and waxes and wanes. If your pain is too disturbing, soothe it with slight movement, and try to “breathe through” the pain.

Become aware of the part of your mind that registers pain and is hurting. Focus on it. Realize that your pain is not just in your body, and not just in your mind. Your pain is a mind/body phenomenon. It’s also in your spirit. Focus on the part of your spirit that is in pain. Realize how intimately your mind and body and spirit are connected.

Find the areas of your mind, body, and spirit that are not in pain. Focus on the comfort in them, and the health. Recognize this comfort as a real sensation, as real as your pain.

As you explore your body, mind, and spirit—without words and without thoughts, deeply relaxed and fully aware—you may begin to drift into the sacred space where your healing will take place. Don’t strive for the space, or even try to occupy it. Let it occupy you.

As you begin to feel increasingly strong and centered, inhale deeply.
